About This Experience
Zoo Antwerpen (Antwerp Zoo) is one of the world's oldest and most beautiful zoos, opened in 1843 in the heart of Antwerp directly adjacent to Antwerp Central Station. The zoo masterfully combines 19th-century architectural grandeur with modern animal welfare in a compact urban setting. The entrance features stunning neo-classical architecture, and many historical buildings throughout create museum-like atmosphere. Despite its central location, the zoo houses over 5,000 animals from 950 species across beautifully landscaped grounds. The Elephant House is an architectural masterpiece - a grand Indo-Egyptian temple housing Asian elephants with outdoor paddock. The Egyptian Temple complex features period architecture while providing modern habitats. The Nocturnal House allows visitors to experience night-active animals in reversed day-night cycles, observing bats, civets, and nocturnal creatures in activity. The Reptile House showcases snakes, lizards, crocodiles, and amphibians in naturalistic terrariums. The Aquarium features both freshwater and marine species. Bird aviaries include a free-flight tropical house where birds soar overhead. Mammal exhibits include big cats (lions, tigers, leopards), primates (gorillas, bonobos, orangutans, various monkeys), giraffes, hippos, seals, and sea lions. The Planckendael breeding center (sister facility) supports conservation breeding. Daily sea lion shows, bird of prey demonstrations, and animal feedings provide entertainment and education. The zoo operates strong education programs and conservation initiatives. Multiple historical buildings house restaurants and cafes. The Biergarten offers Belgian beer and refreshments. The central location makes the zoo incredibly accessible - visitors can literally step off the train at Antwerp Central Station and be at the zoo entrance within one minute. Operating year-round, the zoo provides excellent facilities regardless of weather. The combination of historic architecture, comprehensive animal collection, central accessibility, and cultural significance makes Antwerp Zoo an essential Belgian attraction.
