About This Experience

Berlin Zoological Garden is Germany's oldest and most famous zoo, opened in 1844. Located in the heart of Berlin near the Tiergarten, the zoo holds the distinction of presenting the largest collection of species in the world - over 20,000 animals representing approximately 1,380 species. The iconic Elephant Gate entrance, built in 1899 in exotic Oriental style, is one of Berlin's landmarks. The zoo is home to giant pandas Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, whose twin cubs born in 2019 were the first pandas born in Germany. The historic aquarium building (separate admission) houses one of Europe's most comprehensive collections of aquatic life, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates across three floors. The Hippopotamus House features an incredible underwater viewing gallery where visitors watch hippos swimming and walking underwater - one of the zoo's most popular attractions. The Panda Garden provides an authentic Chinese atmosphere for the pandas. Modern facilities include the penguin house with underwater viewing, the predator enclosure featuring various big cats, and spacious aviaries. The zoo suffered heavy damage during WWII but has been meticulously rebuilt and modernized while retaining historic buildings and character. The adjacent Aquarium Berlin (combined tickets available) is one of the world's most species-rich aquarium facilities with 9,000 animals. The zoo's central location makes it easily accessible by public transport. Multiple restaurants, playgrounds, and souvenir shops provide amenities. With its unmatched species diversity, historic significance, central location, and continuous modernization, Berlin Zoo offers a comprehensive zoological experience.
