About This Experience
Diergaarde Blijdorp (Blijdorp Zoo) is one of the oldest and most beautiful zoos in Europe, opened in 1857 and relocated to its current Blijdorp location in 1940. The zoo beautifully balances historical architecture with modern naturalistic exhibits across its compact but well-designed grounds. The Oceanium is a major attraction - a spectacular public aquarium and oceanographic facility featuring sharks, rays, tropical fish, sea turtles, and jellyfish in massive tanks with walk-through tunnels providing immersive underwater experiences. The Amazon rainforest hall recreates South American jungle with free-flying birds, butterflies, capybaras, and tropical vegetation in a humid, climate-controlled environment. The Rivièra hall showcases Mediterranean wildlife including Humboldt penguins swimming in crystal-clear pools viewable above and below water. The Butterfly Paradise houses hundreds of exotic butterflies in a tropical garden where they fly freely around visitors. Mammal exhibits include Western lowland gorillas in a naturalistic forest habitat, Asian elephants with indoor and outdoor spaces, polar bears with deep pool allowing underwater viewing, tigers, lions, and chimpanzees. The historic Het Huis van Amazone (Amazone House) features Art Deco architecture dating to 1940. The zoo emphasizes conservation with successful breeding programs for endangered species. Educational programs and keeper talks occur throughout the day. The Children's Zoo allows interaction with farm animals. Beautiful landscaping with mature trees, ponds, and gardens creates a relaxing environment. The zoo's location in northern Rotterdam makes it easily accessible via public transport. Operating year-round with indoor facilities ensuring entertainment regardless of weather. With its combination of historic charm, modern facilities like the Oceanium, diverse animal collection, and beautiful setting, Blijdorp remains one of the Netherlands' premier zoological attractions.
