About This Experience
Copenhagen Zoo (Københavns Zoologiske Have) is one of Europe's oldest zoological gardens, founded in 1859, located in Frederiksberg just west of central Copenhagen. The zoo masterfully combines historical architecture with cutting-edge modern design across its compact 11-hectare site, housing over 4,000 animals from 264 species. The zoo is internationally renowned for its architectural landmarks: the historic Elephant House designed by Norman Foster features a stunning glass and steel dome creating a climate-controlled habitat; the Arctic Ring designed by BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) creates an innovative polar bear and arctic fox habitat where visitors walk through underwater tunnels and elevated walkways for multiple viewing perspectives; the Hippo House features underwater viewing of hippos; the Tropical Zoo creates rainforest environments for gorillas, orangutans, and tropical species. The zoo houses giant pandas Xing Er and Mao Sun in a specially designed Chinese-themed habitat - one of very few European zoos with pandas. Other significant species include Sumatran tigers, African elephants, polar bears, rhinos, giraffes, lions, and extensive bird collections. The Children's Zoo allows hands-on interaction with domestic animals and small creatures. Educational programs, keeper talks, and feeding times occur throughout the day providing insights into animal behavior and conservation. The Savanne (Savanna) features African wildlife in mixed-species exhibits mimicking natural ecosystems. The zoo has strong commitment to conservation with breeding programs for endangered species. Multiple dining options from quick snacks to restaurants serve visitors. The zoo's central Copenhagen location makes it easily accessible via public transport or walking from the city center. Operating year-round with each season offering different experiences. The combination of historical significance, world-class architecture, rare species like pandas, and excellent animal care makes Copenhagen Zoo a must-visit attraction.
