About This Experience

The Wurstelprater (Vienna Prater) is one of the world's oldest amusement parks, located in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district. Dating back to 1766 when Emperor Joseph II opened the Prater grounds to the public, it evolved into a permanent amusement area. Unlike modern theme parks, the Prater operates as a traditional European fairground with free admission - visitors pay per attraction. The park features around 250 attractions ranging from historic rides to modern thrill experiences. The Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel) is Vienna's most iconic landmark, built in 1897, standing 65 meters tall offering spectacular city views from elegant gondola cabins. This historic wheel has appeared in films including "The Third Man" and remains the park's centerpiece. Modern thrill rides include Turbo Boost - a vertical accelerator tower, Praterturm - a 117-meter gyro tower (Europe's tallest chain carousel), Black Mamba - a looping coaster, Boomerang - a shuttle coaster, and Schwarze Mamba - an inverted coaster. Classic attractions include ghost trains, fun houses, bumper cars, carousels, and traditional carnival rides. Madame Tussauds Vienna wax museum operates within the Prater. Traditional Austrian food stalls and restaurants serve Viennese cuisine including schnitzel, sausages, and pretzels. Beer gardens and cafes provide relaxed dining with local beer. The Prater's year-round operation includes winter markets and seasonal events. The surrounding Prater Park (Prater green) offers 6 million square meters of parkland, forests, meadows, and recreational areas - a vast green space within Vienna. The Hauptallee (main avenue) is a 4.5km tree-lined boulevard popular for jogging, cycling, and walking. The combination of free admission, pay-per-ride model, historic significance, iconic Ferris wheel, and location in Vienna's green lung makes the Prater a unique cultural attraction blending amusement with Viennese tradition.
